In quiet recognition of just how long the Rolling Stones have been rocking audiences across the world, their latest tour is being sponsored by the American Association of Retired Persons, better known as AARP. Chuck Arnold reports for the NY Post: Call it sympathy for the seniors. In a pairing over 60 years in the making, the not-so-retiring Rolling Stones will be hitting the road in 2024 on a tour backed by the AARP. That’s right. Mick Jagger, 80; Keith Richards, who turns 80 Dec. 18; and Ronnie Wood, 76, are throwing in with AARP, the org once known as the American Association of … [Read more...]
Tensions Rise Over Metal Tariffs
By bird_saranyoo @Adobe Stock Kim Mackrael and Laurence Norman of The Wall Street Journal report that Trans-Atlantic tensions over metals tariffs are proving resistant to a resolution. They write: The Biden administration’s relationship with the European Union, a vital geopolitical ally in a time of crisis, is being tested by a Trump-era policy on metals tariffs that the White House had sought to unwind. Former President Donald Trump in 2018 slapped hefty tariffs on most U.S. steel and aluminum imports, citing national security as grounds. The move infuriated U.S. allies—including other … [Read more...]
Hydrogen-Power Supply Chain Getting Serious Money
Paul Page of The Wall Street Journal reports, the U.S. is putting some serious funding towards building a hydrogen-power supply chain. He writes: The White House is injecting a gusher of cash into hydrogen production, an undeveloped sector that it is betting will play a pivotal role in the country’s shift away from fossil fuels. The Biden administration is awarding $7 billion in grants for seven regional hubs to produce clean hydrogen, a potential substitute for oil and gas in shipping, steelmaking and chemical production, the Energy Department said Friday. Created by the 2021 … [Read more...]
Amazon Prime Day Drive Online Sales
Matt Day, and Spencer Soper of Bloomberg write (abridged): US shoppers spent $12.7 billion online during Amazon.com Inc.’s 48-hour Prime Day, up 6.1% from a year ago but short of estimates for 9.5% growth, according to Adobe Inc. An increasing share of customers used “buy now, pay later” services, Adobe said, indicating shoppers are concerned about the economy. “For months, consumers have felt the effects of persistent inflation and an uncertain economic environment, and it has pushed shoppers to embrace more flexible ways to manage their spending around the Prime Day event,” said Vivek … [Read more...]
Young’s Retirement Compounders
Two decades ago, I developed the Retirement Compounders (RCs) as a portfolio to hold through thick and thin. Concentration is on dividends and on compound interest. Expectations are justifiably modest. The Prudent Man Rule overrides all. … [Read more...]
Dick Young’s Advice: “Make it a Good Year with Your Survival Guy”
How are you doing on the personal security front? “My son-in-law E.J. Smith recently acquired another favored Sig Sauer 226 MK 25 chambered in 9mm,” I wrote in my September 2015 issue of Richard C. Young’s Intelligence Report, “I am a big fan of the 9mm handgun, and own a Beretta. “In E.J.’s case,” I continued, “he has invested a lot of time and energy in the Sig 226 to gain proficiency. The price of the Sig 226 is up 25% over the last five high-demand years. As E.J. notes in a recent post at his website, www.yoursurvivalguy.com, ‘Often times the best investments are made when making a … [Read more...]
Lower Portfolio Risk to Boost Return
UPDATE: The words I wrote in this post from August 27, 2010 are as sound today as they were back then. The basic principles of good investing just never change. This is how we operate at Richard C. Young & Co., Ltd. Do you know the difference between total return and investor return? Most investors are familiar with the concept of total return. The total return of a fund is simply the sum of the capital and income return of a fund over a certain holding period. The total return of a fund of course assumes a buy-and-hold strategy. Investor return (a Morningstar term) is a measure of … [Read more...]
What Americans Can Learn from the Baltics’ Flat Tax Success
The Cato Institute’s Dan Mitchell offers Americans an outstanding primer on the success the Baltics have had with the flat tax. I'm a big fan of the Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. These three countries emerged from the collapse of the Soviet Empire and they have taken advantage of their independence to become successful market-driven economies. One key to their relative success is tax policy. All three nations have flat taxes. Estonia's system is so good (particularly its approach to business taxation) that the Tax Foundation ranks it as the best in the OECD. But … [Read more...]

A Stacked Deck: Is your broker providing compromised investment advice?
I want to briefly touch on the subject of broker dealers (especially publically traded firms) as they relate to our private, family registered investment-advisory firm. I started our money management business over two decades ago in response to years of requests from my strategy report readers for such assistance. Back then, I was still researching and writing every word of Young’s World Money Forecast. YWMF was a 50-page monthly monetary and economics report for institutions and corporate financial officers, I was kept busy. I could only work with a handful of clients. As time passed and it … [Read more...]
