Corporate Bond Yields: What You Can Earn Today

September 30, 2022 By Jeremy Jones, CFA

Corporate bonds are a good place to pick up yield in the bond market. With yields on government bonds in much of Europe and Japan in negative territory, corporate bonds offer a higher-yielding alternative. Corporate bonds are a broad universe, though. What You Start to See Is a Death Spiral

September 30, 2022 By E.J. Smith

Your Survival Guy is never surprised about these headlines during troubled markets. Here’s a beauty from yesterday in the WSJ, “Pension Strategy Left Funds Vulnerable to Rate Increases.” Apparently, pension managers were using leverage and collateral to hedge against rate increases, but when the collateral loses value, margin calls come a-knockin'. And like clockwork, when bad stuff happens, it always seems to be a surprise. State Pension Funds Brace for Private Equity Losses From the WSJ: Pension funds adopted the so-called liability-driven investment strategy, or LDI, to address … [Read more...]

Did China Cripple Its Economy with Covid Lockdowns?

September 30, 2022 By Jeremy Jones, CFA

Since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, China has used harsh lockdowns of entire cities to tamp down outbreaks. Now it looks like the negative effects of that hard lockdown strategy may be coming home to roost. Stella Yifan Xie reports for The Wall Street Journal, writing: Chinese economic activity remained feeble in September, with the services sector slipping into contraction, offering new evidence of the damage that Beijing’s Covid-prevention measures and a deepening real estate slide are inflicting on the country’s economy. Activity in the services sector, which includes the retail, … [Read more...]

Why Your State Doesn’t Need an Income Tax

September 30, 2022 By E.J. Smith

Your Survival Guy’s been the beneficiary of meeting Chris Edwards at various Cato events. He’s hitting it out of the park. Here’s yet another outstanding piece: State and local governments raised $1.9 trillion in taxes in 2020. The main sources were sales taxes (35 percent), property taxes (32 percent), and individual income taxes (23 percent). But nine states do not impose an individual income tax. How do they run their governments without it? The nine states without an individual income tax are Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and … [Read more...]

September 29, 2022 By E.J. Smith

You know emotions can wreak havoc on investors. Feeling good or bad about investments shouldn’t be a month-to-month roller coaster. But in my conversations with you, I know you’re reading that the so-called experts are calling for more doom and gloom. They’ve been making this call for years now. Even a broken clock is right—you know the phrase. Prices Are Like Adult Kids: You Don’t Have Much Control Over Them Look, I’m Your Survival Guy, not a meteorologist. Bad stuff happens. Predicting when and where is almost impossible. How bad it really will be is subjective. Sure, there are … [Read more...]

Does Apple’s iPhone Plan for India Signal a China Exodus?

September 29, 2022 By Jeremy Jones, CFA

Apple is building its latest smartphone, the iPhone 14, in India, rather than China. The question that arises from Apple's decision is, is this the beginning of a trend for foreign manufacturers in China? John Reed reports in the Financial Times on Apple's decision, writing: Apple has begun producing its iPhone 14 model in southern India less than a month after it was launched, as the company works to diversify its supply chains out of China and expand production in India. “We’re excited to be manufacturing iPhone 14 in India,” the company said in a statement on Monday. Apple’s Taiwanese … [Read more...]
