Here is some good news for truck and SUV enthusiasts. The Trump administration has reopened a review of vehicle emissions standards requiring auto makers to sell vehicles averaging 54.5 miles per gallon (40 mpg in real world conditions) by 2025.
If you’ve purchased a truck or SUV lately, you may have been disappointed with the underwhelming power or the gimmicky features intended to add power without increasing fuel consumption to meet those standards. You wouldn’t be alone in that view.
The Trump review offers new hope for those of us who would gladly sacrifice fuel efficiency for more power.
The WSJ has more.
The Trump administration reopened a review of vehicle-emissions standards, reversing an earlier Obama administration decision to lock in future targets and extending an olive branch to an industry the current president has targeted over Mexican imports and commitments to U.S. jobs.
The Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday said it would work with the Transportation Department to reassess standards that require auto makers to sell vehicles averaging 54.5 miles a gallon, or 40 mpg in real-world driving, by 2025. Speaking to auto workers in Michigan, President Donald Trump proclaimed the move a victory for the industry that would preserve American jobs.
“We are going to ensure that any regulations we have protect and defend your jobs and your factories,” Mr. Trump said at a former Ypsilanti, Mich., assembly plant near Detroit. “We’re going to be fair.”
Mr. Trump won Michigan, long a reliable state for Democrats, by a slim margin in November’s election, helping propel him to the White House, and has vowed to push back on the actions of federal regulatory agencies, including the EPA.
“We want to be the car capital of the world again and we will be, and it won’t be long, believe me,” Mr. Trump said. “We helped the companies. And they’re going to help you.”
