Dana Mattioli and Joe Flint explain Amazon’s questionable behaviors in The Wall Street Journal, writing:

Executives from HBO Max complained about Amazonโ€™s behavior during the negotiations to the House Antitrust Subcommittee investigating Amazonโ€™s business practices, said people familiar with the probe.

Amazonโ€™s Mr. Evans said that there are occasions, including its talks with HBO, when companies are interested in exploring partnerships across multiple Amazon businesses.

A former longtime senior AWS executive said that in recent years AWS has discussed how to better leverage its cloud clout in broader Amazon negotiations. Because of Amazonโ€™s size, it is common for companies to work with many different business units within Amazon. Some AWS customers also sell large volumes of their products on Amazon.com.

Amazonโ€™s Mr. Evans said that negotiations often donโ€™t occur in a silo and that Amazon and its partners often seek to reach agreements that cover multiple aspects of their businesses and Amazonโ€™s.

โ€œWe are fortunate to have grown so fast and have a healthy business that we were able to say no and take a big hit and survive,โ€ he said. โ€œMost businesses canโ€™t afford to say no.โ€
