U.S. job openings were little changed at 7.3 million in July, with the job openings rate holding at 4.4%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Hires remained at 5.1 million (3.2%), while total separations were also 5.1 million (3.2%).

Quits totaled 3.1 million (1.9%), suggesting workers’ willingness to leave jobs remained steady. Layoffs and discharges were 1.7 million (1.0%), while other separations were about 350,000.

Job openings increased by 76,000 in durable goods manufacturing, while hires declined by 188,000 in professional and business services. June job openings were revised down to 7.2 million, from the previously reported figure.

Overall, the report shows a labor market that remained relatively stable in July, though hiring continues to show signs of moderation.
