Amazon Web Services redesigned its Mississippi data centers after utility provider Entergy warned that heavy electricity demand could force the facilities to disconnect during peak periods. In response, Amazon developed Project Falcon, an automated system that lets data centers switch from grid electricity to backup power when utilities signal grid strain, without requiring direct communication with AWS staff, The Information reports.

The move highlights the growing pressure AI data centers are placing on the U.S. power grid. Amazon is exploring backup generators, batteries, natural gas, and other energy sources to maintain reliable operations. Amazon could eventually deploy Project Falcon at other data centers as technology companies seek ways to manage rising electricity demand while reducing strain on local utilities.
