The SunZia Wind Project, now in commercial operation, has become the largest wind farm in the United States with 3,650 MW of generating capacity from 916 turbines across central New Mexico. Developed by Pattern Energy after nearly two decades of planning and permitting, the project more than doubles New Mexico’s wind capacity and makes wind the state’s largest source of generating capacity at 45%.

Most of SunZia’s electricity will be exported to Arizona and Southern California via a new 550-mile high-voltage transmission line, according to the US Energy Information Administration. The project’s scale has already had a noticeable impact on regional power markets, helping California set a new hourly wind generation record in May 2026 and strengthening the role of renewable energy across the Southwest.
