According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), private-sector businesses added 7.8 million gross jobs from September to December 2025, while job losses totaled 7.2 million, reflecting continued movement as businesses expanded, contracted, opened, and closed.
In the fourth quarter of 2025, expanding establishments created 6.2 million jobs and new businesses added 1.6 million jobs, while contracting firms lost 5.8 million jobs. Small and large businesses all recorded net gains, with service industries leading growth with a 588,000-job increase.
The data shows a resilient labor market, with job creation continuing to outpace losses across most states and industries.
