The United States and Iran announced an interim peace deal after nearly four months of conflict, according to the WSJ. Mediated by Pakistan, the agreement is expected to be formally signed later this week and includes an end to military operations and steps to ease trade and shipping restrictions.
The deal also begins negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, with Iran potentially receiving sanctions relief in exchange for limits on its nuclear activities. Despite tensions involving Israel and Hezbollah and opposition from hard-liners, both sides hope the agreement will reduce conflict and improve economic conditions.
Bloomberg reports that shipowners welcomed the proposed US–Iran deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but many are waiting for details on safety and mine-clearing operations before resuming normal transit. About 600 vessels are currently seeking to leave the Gulf region.
