Your Survival Guy and Gal are what I call part-time empty nesters. The kids are out of the house but come home on weekends or days off.

When they’re here, it’s like they never left. Water bottles are everywhere, backpacks are dropped in places to be tripped over, and after the kitchen is cleaned, I’m told, “Oh, thanks, I was going to do that.” It’s a busy time. Then they leave. And it’s too quiet.

After a few days, you get over being alone in an empty house. You sort of get back into a rhythm and your phone dings, “I’m coming home tonight” or “I’m coming home this weekend. Is it OK if (insert names here) come down?”

And of course, the answer is “Great, see you soon,” because what’s the alternative?

I can only imagine what it’s like when you have grandchildren and how exhausting the days are, but how much you miss them when they leave. It’s a tough cycle, and it’s why having kids is not for the faint of heart. You need help keeping it all together.

Action Line: In my conversations with you, you tell me how busy you are with family. Nice. I’m here to help. Email me at ejsmith@yoursurvivalguy.com.
