A new Government Accountability Office (GAO) report found that the US remains heavily dependent on foreign sources for critical minerals needed for batteries, semiconductors, energy systems, and defense technologies. The report highlights recycling and alternative materials as potential solutions to reduce supply chain risks.
GAO found that battery recycling and new battery technologies offer near-term opportunities, but the US lacks sufficient recycling infrastructure. Reducing reliance on minerals used in semiconductors will be more difficult due to technical challenges and limited substitutes.
The report recommends continued investment in domestic production, recycling capabilities, and research into alternative materials to strengthen US critical mineral security.
