The US Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) reported that US direct investment abroad increased by $438.1 billion to $7.14 trillion at the end of 2025, driven primarily by growth in Europe, especially the United Kingdom and Luxembourg. Manufacturing led investment growth, with chemical manufacturing accounting for a significant share. US multinational companies earned $660.1 billion from their overseas investments in 2025, an 11.1% increase from the previous year.
Foreign direct investment in the United States also grew, rising $266 billion to $5.86 trillion in 2025. The largest increases came from European investors, with Japan, the Netherlands, Canada, and the United Kingdom among the top sources of foreign investment. Manufacturing remained the largest industry for foreign investment in the US, particularly chemical manufacturing, followed by finance and insurance and wholesale trade. Foreign companies earned $310.1 billion from their U.S. investments in 2025.
