
Spain’s gas use for electricity generation increased by 41% in the first half of 2025, as the country relied heavily on combined-cycle gas turbines to stabilize the grid following a major blackout in April, according to Bloomberg. Gas provided nearly half of Spain’s power during critical hours, up from just 5%, according to Enagas. The country also increased gas exports by 24%, primarily to France, amid maintenance at French import terminals and efforts to replenish storage. They write:

Spain’s gas exports also jumped 24% in the first half as higher volumes were shipped to France to fill underground storage facilities, while some French regasification terminals that process seaborne imports underwent maintenance.
