In 2024, U.S. energy production reached a record 103 quadrillion Btu, a 1% increase from 2023, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Natural gas led at 38%, followed by crude oil at 27%, both setting records. Renewable sources, including solar, wind, and biofuels, also reached new highs, while coal production dropped to its lowest level since 1964. They write:

In 2024, the United States produced a record amount of energy, according to data in ourย Monthly Energy Review. U.S.ย total energy productionย was more than 103 quadrillionย British thermal unitsย in 2024, a 1% increase from the previous record set in 2023. Several energy sourcesโ€”natural gas, crude oil, natural gas plant liquids, biofuels, solar, and windโ€”each set domestic production records last year.

Natural gas accounted for aboutย 38% of U.S. total energy productionย in 2024 and has been the largest source of U.S. domestic energy production every year since 2011, when it surpassed coal. U.S.ย dry natural gas productionย was nearly 38 trillion cubic feet, about the same as in 2023.

Domesticย crude oilย accounted for about 27% of U.S. total energy production in 2024, as the United States continues to be theย worldโ€™s top crude oil-producing country. U.S. crude oil production was a recordย 13.2 million barrels per dayย in 2024, 2% more than the previous record set in 2023. Almost all of the production growth came from theย Permian regionย that spans parts of New Mexico and Texas.

Coalย accounted for about 10% of U.S. total energy production in 2024. Atย 512 million short tons, last yearโ€™s coal production was the lowest annual output since 1964. Coal was the largest source of U.S. energy production from 1984 through 2010.

Natural gas plant liquidsย (NGPL), which includes fuels such as ethane and propane that are associated withย natural gas processing, accounted for about 9% of U.S. total energy production in 2024. NGPL production was a recordย 4 trillion cubic feetย in 2024, up 7% from 2023. Domestic NGPL production have increased every year since 2005 asย U.S. natural gas production and processing capacityย have increased.

Biofuels, wind, and solar production each set records in 2024, contributing to recordย total renewable energy productionย in the United States. In 2024,ย U.S. total biofuels production, which includesย ethanol,ย renewable diesel,ย biodiesel, andย other biofuelsย such asย sustainable aviation fuelย (SAF), was a record 1.4 million barrels per day, up 6% from previous records set in 2023.

In 2024, U.S.ย solarย andย windย production increased by 25% and 8%, respectively, as newย generators came online. Output from other energy sources that are primarily used for electric power generation either peaked decades ago (hydropowerย andย nuclear) or fell slightly from their 2023 values (geothermal).

We convert sources of energy to common units of heat, calledย British thermal units, to compare different types of energy that are usually measured in units that are not directly comparable, such as barrels of crude oil and cubic feet of natural gas. Appendix A of ourย Monthly Energy Reviewย has the conversion factors that we use for each energy source.
