Speaking ahead of the G7 summit, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen outlined priorities, including global economic imbalances, Ukraine, the Middle East, energy security, and artificial intelligence.
She warned that Europe’s record €360 billion trade deficit with China is unsustainable and called for stronger domestic manufacturing, diversified supply chains, and coordinated action against unfair trade practices. On the Middle East, she welcomed the U.S.-Iran agreement, stressed the need to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to restore energy flows and freedom of navigation, and highlighted the risks of relying on critical oil and energy transit routes. She said Europe must continue developing alternative trade and energy corridors to reduce vulnerability to future disruptions.
Von der Leyen also reaffirmed Europe’s support for Ukraine through financial aid, sanctions on Russia, and EU accession talks. On technology, she called for greater cooperation on AI safety while accelerating AI adoption and innovation across Europe, alongside stronger protections for children online.
The EU is using the G7 to push for action on trade imbalances, energy security, geopolitical stability, AI governance, and digital safety.
