When you graduate from work to your retirement life, it’s jolting. As you know, in my series, there’s plenty to worry about, and there’s plenty you can do to survive and thrive. It’s a lot like graduating from school and joining the workforce—saving till it hurts, and dreaming about retirement. It’s a stressful time. If there’s one rule that stands out above the rest, it’s this: do not lose money.
Learning how not to lose money is far from easy. You can learn through study and careful avoidance, or you can learn in the school of hard knocks. But the best teachers are those who do “money” for a living.
What is true is that markets go up and markets go down, but not always on your schedule. A schedule that doesn’t free up in retirement. One myth about retirement is that you’ll have lots of time—you won’t. Managing your money is not how you want to spend the free moments you have in what will be your busiest time. You need to live your retirement life.
Action Line: If we could live life in reverse, we’d be geniuses. If you want the next best thing, talk with someone who’s seen it all. When you want someone to spend time thinking about your retirement so you don’t have to, email me at ejsmith@yoursurvivalguy.com.
