When you graduate from work to your retirement life, itโs jolting. As you know, in my series, thereโs plenty to worry about, and thereโs plenty you can do to survive and thrive. Itโs a lot like graduating from school and joining the workforceโsaving till it hurts, and dreaming about retirement. Itโs a stressful time. If thereโs one rule that stands out above the rest, itโs this: do not lose money.
Learning how not to lose money is far from easy. You can learn through study and careful avoidance, or you can learn in the school of hard knocks. But the best teachers are those who do โmoneyโ for a living.
What is true is that markets go up and markets go down, but not always on your schedule. A schedule that doesnโt free up in retirement. One myth about retirement is that youโll have lots of timeโyou wonโt. Managing your money is not how you want to spend the free moments you have in what will be your busiest time. You need to live your retirement life.
Action Line: If we could live life in reverse, weโd be geniuses. If you want the next best thing, talk with someone whoโs seen it all. When you want someone to spend time thinking about your retirement so you donโt have to, email me at ejsmith@yoursurvivalguy.com.
