When you graduate from work to your retirement life, itโ€™s jolting. As you know, in my series, thereโ€™s plenty to worry about, and thereโ€™s plenty you can do to survive and thrive. Itโ€™s a lot like graduating from school and joining the workforceโ€”saving till it hurts, and dreaming about retirement. Itโ€™s a stressful time. If thereโ€™s one rule that stands out above the rest, itโ€™s this: do not lose money.

Learning how not to lose money is far from easy. You can learn through study and careful avoidance, or you can learn in the school of hard knocks. But the best teachers are those who do โ€œmoneyโ€ for a living.

What is true is that markets go up and markets go down, but not always on your schedule. A schedule that doesnโ€™t free up in retirement. One myth about retirement is that youโ€™ll have lots of timeโ€”you wonโ€™t. Managing your money is not how you want to spend the free moments you have in what will be your busiest time. You need to live your retirement life.

Action Line: If we could live life in reverse, weโ€™d be geniuses. If you want the next best thing, talk with someone whoโ€™s seen it all. When you want someone to spend time thinking about your retirement so you donโ€™t have to, email me at ejsmith@yoursurvivalguy.com.
