South Korea’s HMM is shifting away from expanding its container fleet and moving toward energy shipping, pausing plans for at least 10 new 13,000-TEU container ships. Instead, the company is focusing on Suezmax tankers, petroleum tankers, VLGCs, and LNG carriers as it sees growing risks from container shipping oversupply, geopolitical costs, and trade uncertainty, FreightWaves reports.

HMM, the world’s eighth-largest container liner with more than 1 million TEUs of capacity, is expanding its energy transport business with new vessel orders, including VLCCs and gas carriers. While analysts expect strong 2026 results, with revenue forecast at $8.9 billion and operating profit of $1.2 billion, the company remains cautious about the future of global container shipping.
