The US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have partnered to accelerate the development of GridSearch, an AI-powered tool that improves how new energy facilities connect to the US electric grid. The initiative supports the DOE’s Genesis Mission, which uses AI and advanced computing to strengthen scientific research, energy innovation, and national security.
GridSearch is based on the open-source Grid Foundation Model (GridFM), developed with contributions from Brookhaven National Laboratory, IBM Research, Stony Brook University, Argonne National Laboratory, and other organizations. Unlike traditional grid simulations that can take months, GridSearch delivers accurate results in minutes, enabling faster evaluation of potential grid connection points.
By reducing interconnection timelines from years to months, the technology can accelerate the development of AI data centers, energy projects, and manufacturing facilities while lowering costs and improving grid planning. AWS will provide cloud infrastructure and AI expertise to help expand GridSearch across major US transmission grids, supporting energy security and US leadership in AI-driven innovation.
