Ukraine launched more than 1,000 drones at Russia in one of its largest aerial attacks of the war, targeting oil facilities, industrial warehouses, and infrastructure around St. Petersburg. The attacks sparked fires, killed at least one person, injured five others, disrupted airport operations, and left around 20,000 people without electricity, according to Al Jazeera. Russia said it had neutralized 1,015 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions.
The strikes came amid rising tensions between Ukraine and the United States. President Donald Trump criticized Ukraine’s attacks on Russian energy infrastructure and defended delaying additional sanctions against Moscow, arguing that sanctions could undermine peace negotiations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of continuing attacks on Ukraine’s energy facilities despite discussions about an energy ceasefire.
Meanwhile, Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia, killed civilians and injured others. The continued attacks on both sides highlight the escalating conflict and the difficulties facing diplomatic efforts to achieve a ceasefire.
