The US Department of Energy (DOE) reports that the United States and Saudi Arabia signed a peaceful nuclear cooperation agreement, known as a 123 agreement, along with a bilateral safeguards agreement to establish a legal framework for future civil nuclear cooperation. The agreements aim to support Saudi Arabia’s nuclear energy goals while promoting nuclear safety, security, and nonproliferation standards.
The partnership is expected to expand opportunities for US nuclear technology companies, create economic benefits and jobs, and strengthen cooperation between the two countries. The agreements also support US energy and national security interests by increasing American participation in the global civil nuclear market. The agreement will now be submitted to Congress for review.
