President Trump’s reported agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin to bring additional Russian diesel into the U.S. is facing growing opposition. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has vowed to explore ways to block tankers carrying Russian petroleum from docking at state ports, citing legal and political concerns.

Seven tankers reportedly traveling from Russia toward the United States have drawn scrutiny, although their cargoes remain uncertain. Some may be carrying fertilizer rather than petroleum products. Democratic lawmakers are also warning ports, banks, energy companies, and shipowners about potential legal consequences under the 2022 law banning Russian energy imports.

Growing political opposition, legal uncertainty, and reputational risks are making U.S. buyers reluctant to accept Russian fuel cargoes, the Maritime Executive reports. Energy consultancy Rapidan Energy suggests some shipments could ultimately be redirected to Brazil.
