The U.S. Department of Energy plans to provide up to $150 million in Defense Production Act funding for Alaska’s Beluga-Healy Transmission Project. Combined with $268 million in non-federal funding, the project represents a planned $418 million investment in Alaska’s power grid.
The project will build about 223 miles of new high-voltage transmission lines between Beluga and Healy, creating a second connection between Southcentral and Interior Alaska. This additional route is expected to improve grid reliability, lower electricity costs, and strengthen power access for about 75% of Alaska’s population, including major military installations.
The DOE says the project is also important for national defense and economic development, supporting Alaska’s growing military presence as well as mining and other resource industries.
