China has pushed back against calls from U.S. AI leaders to slow the development of advanced artificial intelligence. Chinese officials described warnings about rapid AI progress as “fearmongering” and called for an open and cooperative approach to AI governance, according to Forbes.

The comments came after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei proposed slowing frontier AI development, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman supporting the idea. Amodei has warned that China’s growing AI capabilities could create geopolitical risks if the U.S. slows while China continues developing rapidly.

Chinese state media has criticized the proposals as an attempt to contain China’s technology sector. The debate is likely to become an important issue ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s planned U.S. visit, where AI safety and competition are expected to be discussed.
