The US Department of Energy announced $36 million in funding for the University of North Dakota Energy & Environmental Research Center to advance enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in the Bakken shale formation. The “Bakken EOR-CC” program will use CO₂ injection, AI, modeling, and six pilot projects to improve oil recovery rates, which are currently around 10% in shale formations. The initiative aims to unlock billions of additional barrels of oil, support US energy production, and potentially use captured carbon emissions from coal plants for EOR operations.
