The US Geological Survey (USGS) reports that new industry drilling and geological data have prompted a reassessment of the Bossier Formation, a deep shale gas system beneath the Gulf Coast. The formation, which has already produced about 3.8 trillion cubic feet of gas, is now believed to contain additional undiscovered resources in deeper, highly pressurized shale zones.
USGS scientists note that advances in horizontal drilling and shale production techniques have revealed previously underestimated resource potential, particularly in formations located as deep as 18,000 feet. The reassessment highlights the importance of the Gulf Coast as a major US energy-producing region and suggests that new “unconventional” plays may significantly expand domestic gas supplies.
The study is part of the USGS’s broader mission to evaluate undiscovered oil and gas resources, providing data to support energy planning, industry exploration, and national energy security policy.
