The US Energy Information Administration forecasts natural gas demand from the electric power sector will remain near record highs this summer and reach a new record in 2027 as electricity demand continues to grow. Rising commercial and industrial power consumption—driven largely by data centers, manufacturing facilities, and increased electrification in Texas and the Mid-Atlantic region—is expected to fuel higher natural gas use despite expanding renewable energy generation.

ERCOT in Texas and PJM in the Mid-Atlantic are projected to see significant increases in natural gas-fired electricity generation alongside rapid growth in solar power. Nationwide, the long-term trend continues toward replacing coal generation with a combination of natural gas and renewables, particularly solar energy.
