My Nephew Graduates, and I’m Larry the Cable Guy

June 5, 2023 By E.J. Smith

Trump listens as Assistant to the President for Economic Policy Larry Kudlow speaks at a press conference during the 50th Annual World Economic Forum meeting Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2020, at the Davos Congress Centre in Davos, Switzerland. Life Comes at You Fast. Slow It Down with My Friday Email. It’s Free.

Happy Monday. Your Survival Guy’s nephew graduated from Tabor Academy Friday. We celebrated in his hometown, Mattapoisett, MA, where my parents live and where I grew up. It was a gorgeous night dining on Turk’s Seafood overlooking the harbor from my parents’ second floor deck. The classic cars, a Friday night summer tradition, were on display in the park, and all was good with the world.

Then, the next morning with a cold front securely in place, it was too cold to have coffee on the deck. Sitting around the dining room, my dad asked, “Do you like Larry Kudlow?”

“Because we like Larry,” my Mom said. “Do you know Larry?”

“I do,” I said. “Larry’s great.”

That was a mistake.

“Well, we really like Larry, but we can’t get Fox Business,” she said.

And then it hit me. Trapped like a rat with not a wharf to scurry into, I realized I was going to be their “cable guy.”

And so it began.

“What’s your password?” I asked.

“Honey, where do we keep the passwords?” he asked.

Five hours later, with my new friends at call centers all over the world, Larry Kudlow can be watched live on my parents’ television (for an upcharge I might add).

Action Line: Your Survival Guy’s piece of advice to graduates? You never stop being a son or daughter. When Mom and Dad need help, you’re Larry the Cable Guy. When you need help with your portfolio, I’m here.

He grew up in Mattapoisett, MA, an idyllic small town on the water near Cape Cod. He spends time in Newport, RI and Bartlett, NH—both as far away from Wall Street as one could mentally get. He enjoys spending time in Key West (RIP JB) and Paris.
