Your Survival Guy and son headed out for a hike yesterday with our dog Stanton, an adolescent Australian Labradoodle named after Mt. Stanton, which is steps away from our log cabin in New Hampshire.

As we got into the woods and began gaining some elevation, I was asked by my son, “Dad, how’s the pace?” Knowing that if he were alone, said pace would be faster, I responded, “It’s fine, but maybe we can slow down a little bit.” Feeling like the Old Man on the Mountain, it wasn’t to help Stanton, who was already on track to do the hike twice, running back and forth between us. It’s funny how life repeats. Years ago, I remember being on the same trail and asking my dad the same question. “Maybe we can slow down a little bit,” he said.
Near the top, we came across a father and two sons and stopped to chat with them. That’s the thing about hiking. When you come across another party, most times it’s a chance to talk and visit for a minute. They’re visiting from the Netherlands and commented on how beautiful it is up here. It was clear the dad was an experienced hiker, and before they saw us, you could see they were enjoying their time on the mountain.
It was a good walk in the woods.
