Builder sentiment remained weak in August, with the NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index rising just one point to 35. This marked the 16th consecutive month below 40, reflecting continued concerns over high construction costs, elevated mortgage rates, and economic and geopolitical uncertainty.
The housing market also continues to face weak demand. 35% of builders cut prices, while 63% offered sales incentives. Prospective buyer traffic remained especially weak, with its index stuck at 23. Current sales conditions improved slightly to 39, but expectations for future sales held at 43.
Regional conditions were mixed, with the South and West remaining particularly weak. Overall, builders are struggling to attract buyers while facing rising costs, suggesting that the housing market remains under significant pressure despite a modest improvement in sentiment.
