The US Department of Labor has partnered with Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) to expand pre-apprenticeship programs and strengthen the nation’s maritime workforce. The initiative supports the Trump administration’s efforts to rebuild America’s industrial base by creating more pathways into skilled shipbuilding careers and addressing growing workforce needs.
A key proposal would transform the San Diego Job Corps Center into a maritime-focused training hub, with additional support from Job Corps centers in Los Angeles, Inland Empire, and Long Beach. The partnership aims to expand career and technical education, apprenticeships, and workforce training to build a stronger pipeline of skilled shipbuilding workers.
Officials said the collaboration aligns with executive orders focused on expanding skilled trade jobs and restoring US maritime leadership, helping prepare workers for careers in domestic manufacturing and shipbuilding.
