Schneider National and Norfolk Southern have announced a strategic partnership to expand domestic intermodal capacity across the eastern United States. The agreement combines Schneider’s 35 years of intermodal expertise, company-owned tractors, approximately 23,900 chassis, 26,800 containers, and more than 60 North American rail hubs with Norfolk Southern’s extensive eastern rail network. The collaboration aims to provide shippers with greater flexibility, improved efficiency, and a reliable alternative to long-haul trucking.

Under the agreement, Schneider will transition its primary eastern rail provider to Norfolk Southern, expanding access to key markets and creating opportunities to attract new customers and convert truckload freight to intermodal transportation. Norfolk Southern will support the partnership through investments in its 22-state network, including terminal expansions, double-stack clearance improvements, infrastructure upgrades, and enhanced security.

The partnership aims to strengthen domestic supply chains by combining Schneider’s transportation assets and logistics capabilities with Norfolk Southern’s rail infrastructure. Both companies expect the collaboration to improve service reliability, increase capacity, and support the growing demand for efficient rail-based freight transportation.
