Amazon has reached a definitive agreement to acquire satellite firm Globalstar for $11.57 billion, a strategic move aimed at accelerating its competition with SpaceX’s Starlink, reports Reuters. The acquisition integrates Globalstar’s satellite fleet and valuable spectrum assets into Amazon’s Project Kuiper, significantly advancing the company’s timeline for launching direct-to-device services.

While the deal preserves Globalstar’s existing emergency services partnership with Apple, it provides Amazon with the infrastructure necessary to offer satellite-based connectivity to standard mobile devices by 2028. Pending regulatory approval, the transaction is expected to close in 2027, positioning Amazon as a major player in the rapidly expanding space-based communications market.
