James Rogers and Victor Reklaitis of MarketWatch reports that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg says the company will work with President-elect Trump to push back on governments around the world that are going after American companies and pushing to censor more. They write:
In January 2021, Trump was suspended from Facebook and Instagram in the wake of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, when rioters attempted to stop lawmakers from certifying the result of the 2020 presidential election, which Joe Biden won. The suspension was lifted in 2023.
As recently as last year, Trump described Facebook as “an enemy of the people” in an interview with CNBC.
On Tuesday, Zuckerberg pledged to “work with President Trump” in a sign of a rapprochement that appears to have been building in recent months. Zuckerberg dined with Trump at the president-elect’s Mar-a-Lago club in Florida a few weeks after the November election. Zuckerberg also announced this week that Ultimate Fighting Championship CEO and Trump ally Dana White would join Meta’s board of directors. […]
Meta’s trust and safety and content-moderation teams will be moved out of California, and the company’s U.S.-based content-review work will be done in Texas. “As we work to promote free expression, I think that will help us build trust to do this work in places where there is less concern about the bias of our teams,” Zuckerberg said. Last year, the Washington Post, which is owned by Amazon.com Inc. founder Jeff Bezos, broke with tradition in deciding, reportedly at the 11th hour, not to endorse a candidate in the presidential election, sparking controversy. Bezos, who has locked horns with Trump on a number of occasions in the past, said in December that he is “optimistic” about the president-elect’s coming second term.
