The Financial Times reports that Trump’s administration does not plan to create a formal AI licensing regime, according to departing adviser Sriram Krishnan. He said the government favors a light-touch approach, warning that heavy regulation like an “FDA for AI” would slow innovation and weaken US competitiveness.

While the White House has used national security powers to temporarily delay or restrict some advanced AI models, Krishnan said this is not meant to become a permanent regulatory system. Instead, oversight should remain limited and largely voluntary, with industry playing a central role.

The FT also notes growing tension between this deregulatory stance and rising public and political pressure for stronger AI controls as the technology becomes more powerful and widely deployed.
