
U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright addressed the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, emphasizing the United States’ commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear technology. He highlighted U.S. cooperation with the IAEA in areas including nuclear safety, security, safeguards, nonproliferation, and nuclear science. He also welcomed Timor-Leste as the newest IAEA member.
Wright outlined U.S. plans to expand nuclear energy, including efforts to modernize regulations, speed up advanced-reactor testing and approvals, and support the development of small modular reactors. He referenced the administration’s goal of adding 300 gigawatts of nuclear capacity in the United States by 2050 and discussed the Department of Energy’s use of artificial intelligence to accelerate nuclear research and engineering.
Wright reaffirmed U.S. support for the IAEA and its role in promoting safe and peaceful nuclear technology worldwide. He also called for continued international cooperation and strong safeguards to ensure that nuclear technology is used responsibly.
