Look, this isn’t about me. It’s about you. I’m Your Survival Guy, not someone else’s—I’m all yours. I want you to succeed. I want you to live your dreams. And that doesn’t mean I want the other guys to fail. This isn’t about them. This isn’t a zero-sum game like trading stocks. This is about your success. There’s enough of it to go around for all of us. Your investment success is all yours. Work to make money. Invest to keep it. But how?

Fear’s a big roadblock. It gets in the way of action—and for good reason. Bad stuff happens. There’s a reason your lazy cash is sitting on your couch. It’s a big bad world out there. Your couch is comfortable. And there’s only a few episodes left of “The Bear” (watch it on Hulu). But you know that sitting around eating your food is no way for your cash to live. You know Mr. Lazy needs to get out there and do something with his life. But how?

In the movie Free Solo, Alex Honnold scales Yosemite free of any safety lines. Just…zip right on up the face. Nothing to see here. It’s a day at the park, and he says he doesn’t “feel” fear like the rest of us. Sort of like how a chef doesn’t “feel” scalding hot water on his fingers. Not even a flinch. Nature or nurture? Is it learned?

Big wave surfer Laird Hamilton thinks it is. Hamilton says fear is still felt by him and probably Alex, but your mind/body adjusts to the emotion. It’s too taxing to be emotional, taking energy away from the task at hand. When he was a kid, Hamilton says he was caught in a rip current and pulled out to sea, wondering if he was going to drown. To his surprise, he made it back to shore. The same thing happened the next day and basically for the next year. Rip currents? No big deal now.

Action Line: In my conversations with you, I can feel your fear and concern about doing the right thing with your life’s savings. The key is to find someone who can help you take the emotion out of it. You don’t have a lifetime to get there because you spent your whole life working your craft to make it happen. Now you need someone to take an unemotional approach to helping you keep what you’ve made so you can focus on doing what you want to do—whether that’s free climb, big wave surf, cook, or whatever it is you no longer want to fear.
