U.S. retail and food services sales totaled $763.6 billion in July 2026, down 0.6% from June but 5.0% higher than a year earlier, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The three-month period from May through July also showed solid growth, with sales up 6.3% from the same period in 2025.
The July decline suggests some moderation in monthly consumer spending, but the strong year-over-year increase indicates that consumer demand remains relatively resilient. June’s monthly gain was unchanged at 0.2%, providing additional evidence of continued spending momentum.
Overall, the data points to a still-strong U.S. consumer sector, despite the July pullback.
