Looking over your shoulder is no way to live. Wondering who's behind you. Wondering if you're safe. Feeling uncertain. Uncomfortable. It's scary. Instead, walking with your head up, eyes forward, and shoulders back is the stride of the modern-day warrior. You never tire. You have the same confidence tomorrow as you do today. You're comfortable with who you are. You don't worry about the other guy. You stick to your game. We make enough tough decisions in a day to keep our lives too busy. Take figuring out "what to watch tonight?" for example. It can shake one's confidence. Then, finding … [Read more...]
Your Own Margaritaville Is Here
A Jimmy Buffett-inspired community near Panama City Beach has been named among the nation’s best. Warren Kulo reports for AL.com: Latitude Margaritaville Watersound may have the laid-back vibe inspired by late music legend Jimmy Buffett, but the national praise the community is getting is anything but laid-back. For the second consecutive year, Latitude Margaritaville Watersound has been named one of the top 50 master-planned communities in the country by John Burns Real Estate Consulting and RCLCO Real Estate Consulting, according to the Panama City News Herald. “It certainly is … [Read more...]
Your Survival Guy Trapped in the Key West Cemetery
Happy Friday. Your Survival Guy and Gal recently spent some time in Key West, our home away from home. On one hot sunny afternoon, we decided it was five o’clock somewhere and strolled down to Schooner Wharf for some barbequed shrimp, oysters, and beer. We could have stayed all night, but dinner was at six. With not a lot of time to spare, we decided to take a shortcut and walk through the cemetery. If you’ve been, you know it’s high ground (if you can consider anything high ground in KW), and the sunsets are amazing. The full moon made it especially eerie. “Let’s pick up the pace,” Your … [Read more...]
“Hey, Survival Guy, What about a Beach House?”
“Hey, Survival Guy,” he said. “I see you spend some time in Newport, RI and North Conway, NH. My wife and I are thinking about buying a beach house here in Cali. What’s your take?” “Have you looked at Your Survival Guy’s Super States?” I thought to myself. “You know how I feel about California,” I said. “If you can live with the politics, taxes, cities on fire, etc., it’s a beautiful place. It’s hard to leave the water, I appreciate that, but make sure it’s right to be a buyer as opposed to renting, especially today.” The problem with second homes—and there are many—is they make sense … [Read more...]
Another Word about Your Survival Guy’s Money: Spending
Last week, Your Survival Guy wrote to you about his money. Here’s a recap: save a third, spend a third, and pay taxes with a third. Own your home. Stay out of debt. And invest for dividends, dividend increases, and income. Keep what you make and live to fight another day. But this is a more laid-back piece for you today. Today, let’s talk about spending and the importance of living your life to keep you young. Because it makes all the difference in the world. Within reason, of course. Your Survival Guy and Gal recently celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary in Anguilla. Located in the … [Read more...]
“Jesse’s Going Crazy, Just Running Along the Edges”
Just thinking about our dog Louis, who turned twelve in July, brings a flood of memories. Like when our kids came home that day, dropping their backpacks on the floor like they summited Everest, as a puppy came sliding and tumbling around the corner into them for the first time. Or, when Louis brings Your Survival Guy dead animals, rolls around in “something,” or won’t come in when I know he hears me, and I’m ready for bed. Or grabs dinner—not his—from the counter. Then there’s the times we’re all together on long walks in New Hampshire. But let’s not forget the dog fights at … [Read more...]
Your Survival Guy and Gal Cruising Buzzards Bay
Your Survival Guy and Gal left Newport, RI, for a cruise down Rhode Island Sound Saturday with our destination Mattapoisett, MA, through Buzzards Bay. We took a hard left to swing into Westport, MA, to have some oysters and chowder. Approaching Westport, you have some beautiful coastline with Gooseberry Island off starboard side, then Horseneck Beach State Reservation, and off your port side are hidden ledges sitting like Jaws waiting to grab your hull. You’d never know there was a harbor inside, but once you thread the needle and throttle back, it’s a beautiful, long, winding, narrow, … [Read more...]
Your Retirement Life: Let’s Go Fishing!
Your Survival Guy caught this beauty last night. It’s a slot-sized striped bass. Slot means it measures between 28 inches to less than 31 inches, one fish/person/day. We started off using top water poppers, but the rough seas were keeping the bigger action below the surface. We switched over to small jigs, let ‘em sink, and it was game on. “I’m Having Major Surgery Tomorrow,” He Said
Life comes at you fast. One minute you’re living your retirement life. The next, you need major surgery. “I’m having major surgery tomorrow,” a client said to me yesterday. “Take care of things for me,” he said. “I will,” I said. We’ve been working together for over 20 years. He’s been trusting Richard C. Young for many more. He’s financially fit because he invested in himself at an early age and was smart with his savings. He realized a long time ago that saving money and investing are two different things. He needed help with the second one. I know his family because he tells me about … [Read more...]
Are You Fairly Wealthy? I’m Listening
Did you catch the Sunday New York Times article on the supper clubs in Palm Beach? Look, Your Survival Guy loves Palm Beach, especially lunch at the Brazilian Court, but a supper club? Sounds expensive. But wait a second. When I started running the numbers, I thought, “Self, it could actually work.” That is, if it’s the right one. You don’t have to be an uber-wealthy billionaire to have a nice life. Look for more supper clubs to show up, especially away from super high tax states. Welcome to Florida. OK, you really can’t make up these headlines. Pension funds rethinking private equity … [Read more...]
