The following is the transcript of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous August 28. 1963 "I have a Dream" speech. Also read the BBC account of the day of King's assassination by clicking here. I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation. Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came … [Read more...]
Key West Insider’s Guide: UVA Wine Shoppe
Your Survival Guy wants you to get away from it all this winter. A tropical break, if you will, to my home away from home, Key West. You can read my insider’s guide here, and I’ll have plenty of updates along the way. Having spent a couple of weeks in Key West over Thanksgiving, we had ample time to stop in and visit our friend Mark Gambuzza at his wine shop, UVA Wine Shoppe, located on the corner of Simonton and Southard. Inside, you’ll have much to choose from to make your southernmost visit a better one and you’ll leave with the word on the street from Mark. Go to Mark’s website at: … [Read more...]
Stop America’s Zombie Apocalypse before It Starts
Your Survival Guy has unfortunately experienced the discomfort and uncertainty of a prolonged natural gas outage. When gas service went out in much of Newport, RI, back in 2019, it took days to recover, and many people in town faced significant hardship. Your Survival Guy and Gal did just fine, but it was a real-time test of many of the preparative measures we had put in place. (Read more about the Newport Gas Outage here). Last year, New York City nearly had its own gas outage, as wells in production areas froze up, and demand increased along the overused pipeline routes leading to the Big … [Read more...]
Happy Thanksgiving!
Preparing You and a Loved One for Thanksgiving
Your Survival Guy’s here to help you prepare for Thanksgiving dinner. Not with the turkey, stuffing, or desserts but with the conversation. We all know the third rails of holiday conversation: religion, politics, and money. And not in any particular order. I think politics and religion have worn everyone out and are only brought up in safe spaces like away from the kitchen when you can say how you really feel or not. But not money. Money talk is thrown all around the table like dinner rolls. “Can you believe this economy?” “I’m buying…” “Looks like interest rates higher for … [Read more...]
France Cracks Down on Pro-Palestine Rallies
French President Emmanuel Macron's government has banned rallies in support of Palestine, and after protesters held them anyway, police cracked down on the events. Reuters's Layli Foroudi and Michel Rose report: French police used teargas and water cannon to break up a banned rally in support of the Palestinian people in Paris on Thursday, as President Emmanuel Macron urged the French to remain united and refrain from bringing the Israel-Hamas conflict home. Macron's interior minister had earlier banned pro-Palestinian protests, saying they were "likely to generate disturbances to public … [Read more...]
“Then One Day the Grandfather was Gone”
Your Survival Guy has a client whose grandfather left him some money. That was nice. But the real gift was how his grandfather would teach him about money when they were together. How to roll pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters sitting on the floor and talking. Adding up the pile and feeling the weight in their hands. The boy was taught what interest was, how it was paid, and the miracle of interest on interest. Compounding small amounts into larger ones. The small talk never felt like big life lessons. But they were. As they got older, the money did too—a dollar wasn’t worth a dime—but … [Read more...]
“No Way I’m Spending That Much on Those”
Your Survival Guy and Gal were in Boston this weekend, visiting our daughter and son. If you want to know what stagflation feels like, have two kids in college at the same time. Many of you know exactly what I’m talking about. Take, for instance, after breakfast, strolling down Newbury Street window shopping. The next thing you know, Your Survival Guy’s in a store bombarded with loud thumping music and glowing displays of sneakers. “Oh, I remember those from the 70s,” I thought to myself, “Those are Chuck Taylors.” Flipping them over to look at the price was a shock. “No way I’m spending … [Read more...]

A Plan for Cutting Federal Government Spending
At the Cato Institute, Michael Chapman discusses GOP presidential primary candidate Vivek Ramaswamy's intent to cut federal government spending, and the detailed plan created by Cato's Chris Edwards. Chapman writes: In a recent speech, GOP presidential contender Vivek Ramaswamy outlined a multi‐year plan to reduce the federal workforce by 75 percent, slash regulations, and “shut down redundant federal agencies,” if elected. While Ramaswamy’s goals may seem fantastic, scholars at the Cato Institute have presented detailed policies for reducing the size of the federal government and its … [Read more...]
