America's top-selling beer is no longer Bud Light. Anheuser-Busch has learned firsthand what the words "Go Woke, Go Broke" mean, and sales of Bud Light plummeted after its ill-advised woke marketing campaign. Katherine Hamilton reports in Forbes: Modelo Especial became the most-sold beer in the U.S. in May, pushing Bud Light out of the No. 1 spot it’s held for decades, as Anheuser-Busch struggles to overcome widespread boycotts and controversy stemming from ties with a transgender influencer. About 8.4% of retail beer sales were Modelos, while Bud Light made up 7.3% of sales during the … [Read more...]
Will Congress Allow the Saudis to Buy the PGA?
In 2006, only a few years after 9/11, the House Appropriations Committee effectively killed the acquisition of six ports in the United States by Dubai Ports World, a logistics company based in Dubai, a predominantly Muslim country. Now, Saudi-run LIV Golf wants to buy the PGA Tour, and already there are those in Congress against the idea. Golf doesn't carry the same security concerns as some of the nation's busiest ports, but that isn't preventing senators and congressmen from hating the idea of Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund owning America's premier golf property. Will congress kill the … [Read more...]
SUPER STATE RISING? This State Is Doing All the Right Things
There are some states like New Hampshire, Florida, Texas, Wyoming, and Idaho that are consistently doing the right things for their citizens and ranking in the top tier of Your Survival Guy's Super States. Then there are others who get it mostly right and some that, despite good intentions, seem to land in the middle of the pack. Until recently, Nebraska has been a "middle-of-the-pack" state. Not terrible, but not top tier either. But lately the state, pushed by Gov. Jim Pillen, has been doing all the right things. This year Nebraska became America's 27th permitless carry state when Pillen … [Read more...]
My Nephew Graduates, and I’m Larry the Cable Guy
Happy Monday. Your Survival Guy’s nephew graduated from Tabor Academy Friday. We celebrated in his hometown, Mattapoisett, MA, where my parents live and where I grew up. It was a gorgeous night dining on Turk’s Seafood overlooking the harbor from my parents’ second floor deck. The classic cars, a Friday night summer tradition, were on display in the park, and all was good with the world. Then, the next morning with a cold front securely in place, it was too cold to have coffee on the deck. Sitting around the dining room, my dad asked, “Do you like Larry Kudlow?” “Because we … [Read more...]
Democracy: The Most Dangerous and Insidious Effect of Majority Rule.
UPDATE: 4.20.23: As Joe Biden and Democrats call for more infringements on the Second Amendment, local officials are showing their commitment to protecting the Constitution from federal overreach. Jennifer Eberbach reports in the Livingston Daily that officials in Livingston County, Michigan, are not going to enforce unconstitutional restrictions on citizens' right to bear arms. She writes: A subcommittee of the Livingston County Board of Commissioners has forwarded a resolution reaffirming its stance on Second Amendment protections, encouraging the county sheriff and prosecutor not to … [Read more...]
Your Survival Guy Felt Like a U.N. Worker in Rome
OK, if you’re a regular to www.yoursurvivalguy.com, then you know about surviving and thriving. Much to my chagrin, so much can be learned from my mistakes or mishaps. Is there anything more enjoyable? In this installment, I want to draw your attention to Your Survival Guy’s best insider’s guide to Rome. This is a tricky one because in just a handful of conversations on my first day back stateside, four out of five of you are either going to Rome, just got back, or have a cousin there. It’s not a secret. We live in a world where information is readily available. “Let me google that,” … [Read more...]
Your Survival Guy in Rome 30-Years A.B. (After Babson)
Back in 1994, Your Survival Guy, a recent Babson College graduate, decided to put his diploma to work, and hopped on a plane to Greece to spend some time with a fraternity brother who summered on one of the Greek Isles. “When else are you going to get an opportunity to do this again?” my dad said. And with that, I coordinated with my high school friend, a recent Duke grad, to meet up in Rome and tour Western Europe for a month or so. “Meet you in Rome,” I said. “I’ll figure out how to get there from Athens,” I said. This was not a quick boat ride to Martha’s Vineyard. Your Survival Guy … [Read more...]
A Three-Week International Research Trip to Paris via Rome
Happy Thursday. Your Survival Guy’s been up for hours, having returned yesterday from a three-week international research trip to Paris via Rome. I’ll have plenty to share with you in the weeks ahead. Don’t be a stranger. Beat the Friday email rush by checking in with me daily right here at www.yoursurvivalguy.com OK then, here’s my take on the lay of the land on the international front. The US dollar isn’t what it used to be, and Your Survival Guy doesn’t see it getting any better. Over the last eight years or so, Your Survival Guy’s been traveling to Paris, often twice a year … [Read more...]
Emergency Food Prep You Might Actually Enjoy Eating
One of the problems with emergency food prep is the thought that someday you might have to eat it. Your Survival Guy keeps an MRE package on his bookshelf as a daily reminder. You just don’t know what’s going to happen. Period. But enough of that dire end of the world zombie apocalypse talk. In a conversation with a client last week, he told me they’re building FIFO shelves. Your Survival Guy remembers FIFO, first in first out, from his accounting days at Babson. Who knew it would come in handy for a real-life situation? A couple of weeks ago, I was studying a can of tuna (a … [Read more...]
I Meant to Tell You My Recent “Survival Guy” Story
You know from here, here, here, and here that bad stuff happens. More times than I care to admit, I'm involved. Dear reader, is there anything more enjoyable? I get it. But once the feeling of "thankful it wasn't me" passes, it gets darn serious. "What," you may ask yourself, "if that happens to me?" The other weekend Your Survival Guy arrived at his cabin in New Hampshire with no heat. Hours earlier, glancing at my phone to check the indoor temp I turned up on the app (life's a little too easy at times), I realized it hadn't budged and was falling. Sure enough, the furnace was out. Good … [Read more...]
