According to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), utility-scale battery storage capacity in the United States has grown rapidly, reaching nearly 52 gigawatts (GW) by mid-2026 after adding 8.3 GW in the first six months of the year. Battery storage capacity has expanded at an average annual rate of 70% over the past three years, reflecting rising investment in grid-scale energy storage.

The EIA said operators plan to add another 54 GW of battery storage capacity by the end of 2028, including 14 GW in the second half of 2026 and 26 GW in 2027. Many of the largest battery projects are paired with solar power plants, allowing excess solar energy to be stored when electricity demand is low and discharged during periods of higher demand, improving grid reliability and profitability.
