Prabhat Ranjan Mishra of Interesting Engineering reports that scientists in China have developed niobium tungsten oxide (NbWO), a material that enables lithium-ion batteries to charge in under a minute without losing energy capacity or lifespan. The material improves ion mobility through a lattice relaxation process, allowing for faster charging. Prototype testing showed high energy density and 77% capacity retention after 500 cycles. This innovation is expected to benefit applications that require rapid battery charging, such as electric vehicles and portable devices. Mishra writes:

Scientists in China have improved the battery’s charging time without sacrificing energy capacity or battery lifespan. Using a new material, they have improved ion mobility, which enables faster charging.

The team engineered crystalline material called niobium tungsten oxide (NbWO) to accelerate the charging process.

The new material is expected to be helpful for many applications, which require charging lithium-ion battery within one minute. […]
