The U.S. Department of Energy has designated helium as a critical material under the Energy Act of 2020, aiming to reduce reliance on foreign supplies, strengthen domestic manufacturing, and protect U.S. economic and national security. Energy Secretary Chris Wright emphasized helium’s importance to semiconductor production and advanced technologies.

The designation reflects helium’s essential role in manufacturing, the limited substitutes for critical applications, and growing supply-chain risks. Although the United States has significant domestic helium resources, limited refining capacity and lengthy permitting processes constrain production.

Global helium demand is growing faster than supply, raising concerns about reliable access for American manufacturers. The DOE’s designation aims to support domestic production, create jobs, and secure supplies for industries critical to U.S. technological competitiveness.
