According to the Financial Times, Europe’s helium supply crisis is worsening after China imposed export controls on the critical gas used in semiconductor production, MRI scanners, aerospace, and advanced industries. While China is not a major producer, it has been a key transit route for helium supplies, including Russian exports reaching Europe.
The FT reports that shortages have intensified due to disruptions from major suppliers, including Qatar, causing helium prices to rise sharply. Industry leaders warn that prolonged constraints could pressure technology supply chains, with semiconductor companies facing higher costs and tighter supplies, while strategic sectors such as healthcare and defense receive priority access.
