Donald Trump announced a plan called “Project Freedom” to help guide stranded commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz, where most traffic has been halted amid a US–Israel conflict with Iran, according to the Times. The strait, a key global oil route, has been largely closed or heavily restricted, leaving thousands of seafarers and around 2,000 vessels stuck in the region.
The proposed US-led effort would involve military assets to support ship movement through the area, which has seen rising attacks and escalating tensions. However, details remain unclear, and analysts question whether the operation is logistically feasible given the scale of stranded vessels and security risks.
Iran strongly opposed the plan, warning it would violate cease-fire terms and threatening force against foreign military involvement. The situation has intensified geopolitical tensions, disrupted global shipping and energy markets, and raised concerns about potential renewed conflict while US–Iran negotiations continue in parallel.
