You know how Your Survival Guy feels about being prepared on the water, food, self-defense, and cash front, to name a few. You must deal with each item individually and perform stress tests regularly to see where you stand. In times like these, it’s not getting any cheaper, so imagine how you’ll feel a year from today if everything you want is even more expensive? You need to act now.
Yesterday, for example, in speaking with a client about the stock market, we transitioned to survival prep, including a discussion about our cash on hand. Then we reviewed a common question: How much of your cash do you keep in small bills? Sure, we want that pile of $100 bills, but when the “you know what” hits the fan, you don’t want to be handing $100s out like they’re candy. Think about having smaller bills, $5s, $10s, $20s, to keep you operational and in a liquid state. There isn’t time to ask for “change” in the heat of the moment, and chances are they won’t have any change (or give it to you even if they do.)
Recently, I’ve been reviewing my water prep situation. In a separate conversation with another client with well water, he told me he purchased the Royal Berkey water filtration system. Not too long ago, Your Survival Guy, returning home from the office, noticed our Big Berkey was out on the dining room table. Whoa. “Self, did I miss a nor’easter about to hit the eastern seaboard?” I asked. Entering the kitchen, I asked why our emergency filter was upstairs from our survival cache. “I want to see if this is better than our Zero Water,” she whose name will not be mentioned, said. “I said that’s for an emergency and needs to go back downstairs.”
Weeks passed, and our Big Berkey just sat on our dining room table looking at me as if it was saying, “Who’s the big tough guy now?” Never mind that. Every time someone comes over, they ask: “What’s that big tin thing doing on your dining room table?” “It’s our emergency water filter,” I said. “It’s not supposed to be out.”
Anyway. I told my client I’d resigned myself to set it up, and finally, this past Saturday, I did. And you know what? I love it.
