The U.S. Department of Justice has launched an investigation into a recent cyberattack targeting Coinbase, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, reports Jaiveer Shekhawat of Reuters. According to Coinbase, the probe is focused on the criminal actors behind the breach, not the company itself. The attack, discovered on May 11, involved the theft of some customer data, such as names, addresses, and emails, but no login credentials or passwords were compromised. Coinbase estimates the financial impact could range from $180 million to $400 million. The company is cooperating with U.S. and international law enforcement agencies. Shekhawat writes:

The U.S. Department of Justice has opened a probe into a recent breach at the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase Global, the company said on Monday.

“We have notified and are working with the DOJ and other US and international law enforcement agencies and welcome law enforcement’s pursuit of criminal charges against these bad actors,” said Paul Grewal, Chief Legal Officer, Coinbase. […]
