
Bloomberg reports how extreme summer temperatures placed unusual pressure on Britain’s electricity system. Rising temperatures drove higher demand for cooling from households and businesses, while the heat also reduced the efficiency and availability of some power generation sources.
The UK’s National Energy System Operator (NESO) issued warnings about tighter electricity supply margins as the heat wave increased demand and affected generation capacity. Although officials did not expect widespread outages, the grid required careful management, including securing additional power supplies to maintain reliability.
They highlight the growing challenges for modern power grids as extreme weather events become more frequent. High temperatures can strain transmission networks, reduce output from some plants, and increase reliance on flexible backup generation and energy imports.
