A $1 billion shipyard modernization project led by Davie Defense is set to transform facilities in Galveston and Port Arthur into a major hub for building US Coast Guard icebreakers. The project will modernize the former Gulf Copper shipyards, support the production of Arctic-capable vessels, and is expected to create roughly 2,400 direct jobs while supporting nearly 7,000 jobs across Texas, reports Houston Public Media. Officials say the investment will strengthen the US maritime industrial base, expand domestic shipbuilding capacity, and help address growing strategic competition in the Arctic.
